On the afternoon of August 22, Changzhou Su Dongpo Research Association organized a seminar in commemoration of the 920th anniversary of Su Dongpo’s decease. The event attracted twenty-four participants, including Shu Wen, president of Changzhou’s Literary Federation, and Sun Rushan, deputy secretary of the Municipal CPPCC. Su Shi (1037-1101), also known as Su Dongpo, was a literary giant of the Song Dynasty (960-1279). As a prominent figure in Chinese classic literature, he is known for his achievements in poetry, prose, calligraphy, painting and even gastronomy. However, his political career was not stable, and he was relegated and exiled several times for being involved in political factions. Su Dongpo visited Changzhou 11 times and spent the last years of his life here. At the seminar, participants shared their thoughts on Su Dongpo’s literary works, life experiences, and philosophical thoughts. A review of Su’s life from different perspectives unveiled his charisma and an optimistic attitude towards any setback. President Shu spoke highly of the work done by the Changzhou Su Dongpo Research Association. He hopes that in the future, the Association will continue its efforts in Su studies, thus promoting the cultural cause in Changzhou. By digging into the local culture, Su studies will become more vibrant.
