In 2013, 48,882 people donated blood voluntarily in the urban area of Changzhou, with the amount totaling up to 15.3 tons.

Compared with 2012, the number of people who donated blood and the use of blood decreased in 2013. The staff from Blood Center of Changzhou ascribed the situation to the declining medical demand for blood. On one hand, thanks to National Health and Family Planning Commission’s regulations for clinical blood transfusion, Jiangsu Province Department of Health’s standards for blood transfusion and regulations for construction of blood bank, and provincial and municipal health authorities†supervision over handling of blood, medical institutions made further specifications for clinic behavior of using blood and cut down on the unreasonable use. On the other hand, the implementation of new traffic laws contributed to the decreasing of serious traffic accidents. Besides, hospitals carried out the recycle of surgical autologous blood, such as Changzhou NO.1 People’s Hospital and NO.2 People’s Hospital, which led to the less use of clinical blood.

While the demand for blood dropped, Changzhou still faces a severer situation of blood supply. According to the reporters, due to the expansion of urban framework, people tend to visit different places and are easily affected by the weather. However, the number of blood donation stations is limited. Therefore, Changzhou confronts more difficulties with blood supply in summer and winter.
